All About Alkaline!

If you've been in our shop recently, you have probably seen the word "Alkaline" listed all over the place. It's in our nutmilks, it's an option in our smoothies, and we sell bottles of it. So what is it exactly? Alkaline water is water that has been run through a special alkaline filter that alters the ions, turning it from acidic or neutral state, to alkaline. It is an excellent tool for balancing the pH in your body. Everything you eat & drink

is somewhere on the pH scale (rated from 0 to 14) either acidic (lowest 1) neutral (7) or alkaline (highest 14), and all contribute to the overall pH of your body. Any disease, whether mild or severe, can not take root in a body with a balanced pH. Keeping a balanced pH will help keep you healthy and ward off diseases, but it might take some effort on your part!

The pH of our body, simply put, is the measure of alkalinity or acidity of our body's fluids and tissues. As mentioned, it is measured on a scale from 0 to 14, with the most intense acidity being 0, neutral being 7, and strongest alkalinity (lowest acidity) being 14. Different organs in our body have different pH's, as they all function differently, and have their own purpose. For example, your stomach should be slightly acidic so that it can properly break down food.

While there are many sources of acidity and toxicity in our lives, DIET is the main culprit. If you eat a diet that is heavy in salt, dairy, meat, processed foods, alcohol, and grains, then your acidity will likely be on the high side (meaning a lower pH), which is not good for your system. Adding fruits and vegetables will help keep that balanced, as they will help keep a buffer on the acidity in your body. Even fruit that is acidic in nature, like lemons, tomatoes and grapefruit, are actually digested alkaline by our bodies and contribute to an alkaline environment.

Staying away from all acidic foods is by no means necessary or recommended. However it is good to consciously pay attention to your diet in order to be balanced. Nuts and eggs, for example, are acidic but have very important nutrients for us. It's just a matter of recognizing whether your diet is largely acidic, limiting processed foods as much as possible, and incorporating more alkaline food into your diet. Fruits and vegetables are alkaline forming, especially in raw form, such as juices!
